We need your help!
The Russian River, which flows through the Alexander Valley and Middle Reach of Sonoma County, has reached a dangerous stage. The amount of buildup of sand and gravel is causing the river to erode major portions of private property. This erosion is putting enormous amounts of sediment into the Russian River, plugging spawning tributaries, impacting houses and other structures, and causing residents and corporations large financial burdens in one of the worst economies that has ever existed since the Great Depression. CalTrans has studied the temporary fix at the Highway 128 Bridge approach and they will face a loss of this approach and cost millions to fix the problem and all this could be corrected if the bars upstream and downstream could be skimmed in accordance with the permit the Board of Supervisor's has approved. (See CalTrans Study by WRECO, Walnut Creek, California).
We need the Board of Supervisors to get very active with us and help fix the problems that are standing in the way of mining these gravel bars, without further delay. The agendas that delay the process must stop. There is more than enough information available to the community to go forward with the project and not have to stand by watching while our property and financial assets are destroyed. This issue needs an emergency status placed on those portions of the Russian River that need immediate relief NOW! NO MORE STUDY GROUPS AND WASTED TIME, THE ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION TO SUPPORT THIS FIX IS NOW IN PLACE.
There is NO Federal, State or County Agency that is responsible for flood control on the Russian River, like there used to be. We can get relief now and at no cost to the Federal Government, the State Government or the Local Governments. Bank protection is also an integral part of flood control and we need your help in getting a generic protection design and quick permitting process. We do not have monies for studies and time delays. We need all of you to support our position.
Unless the gravel bars above and below the Geyserville Bridge are removed, Caltrans engineers indicate that the west approach to the bridge will eventually be washed out; possibly within the next year.
